Director

MA. Michal Staňák, Dr.phil, AKC

Michal Staňák has been the director of NIHO since January 1, 2024, following a selection process. Prior to that, from January 1, 2022, he held the position of temporary director of NIHO. In 2020-2021, he led the HTA Agency Department at the Ministry of Health of the Slovak Republic, where, together with his team, he prepared documents for the establishment of a self-governing and independent HTA institution. In 2015-2020, he worked as an HTA researcher at the Austrian Institute for HTA, where he contributed to dozens of HTA assessments for Austria, Germany and the European Network of HTA Institutions (EUnetHTA). Since 2019, he has been a lecturer at the Institute of Social Medicine and Medical Ethics at the Faculty of Medicine of the Comenius University. In 2013-2015, he worked as a teacher at a bilingual upper-secondary school in Bratislava.

Michal Staňák studied in England and Austria. He earned a bachelor's degree in the field of Philosophy at King's College London, a master's degree in Politics, Philosophy and Health Economics at University College London and a doctorate in Applied Ethics in the field of decision-making processes in health care at University of Vienna.
